This book is for anyone and everyone that wants to get better and is willing to put in the time. Through four "rules" we are provided a framework for making habits easier and easier to stick with for the long haul. And, as it turns out, that's the trick to atomic habits. Make small improvements but stick with those small improvements for years and the results will be amazing.

"Changes that seem small and unimportant at first will compound into remarkable results if you're willing to stick with them for years." ~ James Clear

"I succeeded at a few, but I failed at a lot of them. Eventually, I began to realize that my results had very little to do with the goals I set and nearly everything to do with the systems I followed." ~ James Clear

Key Takeaways

  • You do not rise to the level of your goals, you fall to the level of your systems. Build the system, and the goal takes care of itself.
  • Every habit follows the same four-step loop: cue, craving, response, reward. The Four Laws (make it obvious, make it attractive, make it easy, make it satisfying) work by shaping each of those steps.
  • Habits are identity-based. The real goal isn't to read a book, it's to become a reader. Every small action is a vote for the type of person you want to be.
  • Aim for 1% better every day, not a dramatic overnight transformation. Tiny, consistent improvements compound into results that look impossible in hindsight.
  • Make good habits obvious and easy by designing your environment for them, and make bad habits invisible and hard by designing your environment against them.
  • Habit stacking, attaching a new habit to an existing one ("after I do X, I will do Y"), is one of the simplest ways to make a new habit stick.
